Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to 13 points above Arsenal, who have played one game less.
Despite the team’s march towards a second Premier League title, one Liverpool player has been encouraged to leave after being left out against the Magpies.
On Wednesday, Slot made full use of his five substitutions, bringing on Cody Gakpo, Wataru Endo, Jarell Quansah, Darwin Nunez, and Curtis Jones.
However, Harvey Elliott was once again overlooked by Slot, and former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood noticed his reaction on the bench.
“The trouble is for players like Harvey Elliott, I watched him and I was really impressed with what I saw,” Sherwood said on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Special.
“The other boys are coming onto the pitch, he’s made five subs there, and still no Harvey Elliott and you know, he’s not happy. He sat there and his face was so angry and annoyed.”
“I quite admire that. You know, that boy is not going to sit there and just not play.”
Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, and Jones have consistently been chosen over Elliott, who has found himself on the bench 12 times this season.
Elliott missed the first three months of the season due to injury and has only made four starts across all competitions, none of which were in the Premier League.
Despite potentially earning a medal if Liverpool clinch the Premier League title, Sherwood believes that Elliott will be contemplating a transfer due to his limited playing time.
The 56-year-old added: “He will want to leave that football club, I know it’s a brilliant club if he can fight his way into the team, but if he’s not going to play on a regular basis.
“They’ve got players like that and you need players like that, who want to play and want to affect it. At the moment, a top-quality player like him is sitting there and he’s getting no game time.
“If you don’t play and listen, he would be happy picking up a trophy and a medal but in the end, he will want to contribute a lot more than what he’s done.”
In January Elliott was linked with Brighton and Dortmund but stressed he would not be leaving, telling Amazon Prime: “This is my club, I’m a massive fan, you know, and we’re in a great position so far this season”.
Liverpool paid around £1.5 million to sign Elliott from Fulham, plus another £2.8 million in bonuses in line with the required compensation.
