Liverpool told points deduction could follow after Arne Slot clash with Michael Oliver

suggested that the Premier League might consider implementing points deductions for managers’ misconduct in light of Slot’s altercation with Oliver.

Slot expressed his displeasure with Oliver’s decision to allow James Tarkowski’s late equalizer in the February Merseyside Derby.

The Dutch manager received a red card after the final whistle at Goodison Park and is now completing his two-match ban, which will end after the game against Southampton.

“It happened a lot and the emotions got the better of me,” Slot said of his behaviour. “If I could do it differently, If I look back at it, I would love to do it differently. I would do it (differently) next time as well.”

He isn’t the only manager to clash with officials this season. In September, both Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and Nottingham Forest’s Nuno Espirito Santo were sent off when their teams faced each other.

Hackett has cautioned that continued confrontations between managers and referees may lead to the introduction of new regulations.

“I would like to see referees at the final whistle moving towards the tunnel rather than standing in the middle looking for handshakes and any complimentary comments,” Hackett told Football Insider.

“This will I feel reduce any tensions that have built up in the game. I hope that the level of fines will receive a more controlled approach by the manager and his assistant.

“If these fines going forward do not have the desired effect then we may see points deductions coming into play. The last time they used that sanction for an on-field mass confrontation was in the game between Manchester United v Arsenal (in the 1990s) where I was the man in the middle.”

Arsenal faced a two-point deduction following their 1990 encounter, while United received a one-point penalty. Despite Hackett’s conjecture, there’s been no indication from the Premier League that points deductions for on-field infractions are imminent.

Slot wasn’t the only suspension after Liverpool’s match against Everton. Midfielder Curtis Jones received a one-match ban for a red card, as did Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, also missed the Reds’ last league game.

Liverpool managed a victory without their manager on the sidelines, with John Heitinga overseeing the 2-0 league win against Newcastle.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister scored the goals, providing a morale boost for the Merseyside club ahead of their Carabao Cup final against the same opponents.

Slot’s suspension is domestic, so he will return to the dugout for the Champions League but will miss Saturday’s game against Southampton.

Liverpool’s European opponents are Paris Saint-Germain, with the first leg taking place at the Parc des Princes.
