While Slot secured the Premier League title in his debut season, his second year has proven far more difficult, with pressure continuing to build.
Although Slot insists he retains the support of the American hierarchy, contingency plans are being made, with the PSG head coach identified as the individual they would like to appoint for the long term.
Enrique has impressed in the French capital, guiding the team to their maiden Champions League title last season.
That triumph was part of a treble-winning campaign, marking the second time Enrique has achieved such a feat—having previously done so in 2015 while managing Barcelona, where he also lifted the Champions League as part of that treble.
In a surprising twist, Liverpool may even consider turning to Jurgen Klopp as a temporary solution if they decide to dismiss Slot.
The German, currently serving as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, would likely be approached to take charge until the season concludes, as Enrique is not expected to depart mid-season.
Slot has stated that he has continued discussions with the club’s leadership throughout this difficult stretch—a run that arguably hit a new low this week.
Liverpool were shocked by Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, falling 3-0, and their woes deepened with a 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV on Wednesday.
According to The Sun, internal talks have taken place among senior figures at the club, with growing concerns that Slot may be losing the dressing room.
Despite spending £426 million on new signings during the summer, Slot has struggled to establish a consistent lineup or deliver positive results.
The Liverpool manager acknowledges that speculation about his position is inevitable given recent performances, but he remains confident that the club’s leadership still believes in his ability to turn things around. The outcome of upcoming fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds could prove decisive.
The Dutchman said: “It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory. But if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked. If you lose so many times, people start talking about that.
“I have got a lot of support from above. I am OK with my position. They don’t call every single minute of the day to say they trust me, but in the normal conversations we have, I feel the trust.”
