Mainoo, who rose through United’s academy and has made 60 first-team appearances, has been in protracted contract talks with the club.
His current contract, valid until 2027 under an agreement signed in early 2023, reportedly places him among United’s lowest-paid players at £20,000 per week. ..Continue Reading
Though currently recovering from an injury, Mainoo and United are believed to have reopened discussions, with the England international seeking a significant pay increase that aligns with his contributions and value to the team.
Meanwhile, other clubs are keeping a close eye on his situation, particularly Chelsea, who have reportedly made preliminary contact with his representatives.
The Blues, previously linked with Mainoo in January, might reignite their interest as his transfer would represent pure profit for United due to his homegrown status.
It is reported that Mainoo is demanding approximately £180,000 per week to stay at United and would expect the same wage if he moved to Chelsea.
This would place him above Chelsea star Cole Palmer, who earns £130,000 per week, raising concerns about adding another high-earner to Chelsea’s wage structure.
Reports suggest that United and Mainoo might reach a compromise of around £150,000 per week, including bonuses, to settle the contract dispute.
The midfielder, valued at an estimated £80 million, is considered one of United’s most prized assets alongside Alejandro Garnacho.
While some reports claim Mainoo’s wage demands stand at £180,000 per week, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook has indicated the actual figure could be lower.
Crook also emphasized that Mainoo has a strong attachment to United and does not want to leave, but the ongoing uncertainty around his contract must be resolved quickly.
“I think it’s nearer £150k a week, but again, this is a sign that Manchester United are trying to trim the wage bill,” he said, as per Utd District.
“We know when Amad Diallo signed his new deal, it was only, and I say only in inverted commas, 100 grand a week, but that is obviously a lot less than United have historically paid.
“Mainoo is an academy product, someone who loves the football club. He wants to stay at Manchester United, but it’s just a case of coming to an agreement, read the terms, and obviously there is also this PSR issue that United may have to tackle this summer.”
