Osimhen, who has been in prolific goalscoring form on loan at Galatasaray this season, has sparked fresh links to a move to Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim is widely expected to target a new striker ahead of his first full season as United’s head coach. The Red Devils’ struggles in front of goal last term have continued into the current campaign, with their attack ranking as the sixth-worst in the Premier League after 27 games.
Addressing this issue is believed to be at the top of the summer agenda, alongside other areas in need of improvement.
Osimhen has long been a subject of reported interest from the Premier League, particularly from United.
Since Amorim’s arrival in November, the M16 giants have also been linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Liam Delap, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Jonathan David.
Rasmus Hojlund has scored just two Premier League goals since taking on the No. 9 shirt last summer, following his 16-goal debut campaign.
Amorim has publicly acknowledged that Zirkzee isn’t a natural frontman, preferring to use him as one of the attacking midfielders in his 3-4-3 system.
Therefore, a new striker is a priority, but United are set to shift their focus away from Osimhen and consider alternative options.
According to Fussball.News, the 26-year-old isn’t a major topic among United’s recruitment team, though the door hasn’t entirely closed on a potential move.
It is suggested that Osimhen represents the kind of transfer that INEOS has decided to move away from, after years of reckless spending under the Glazer regime.
The revamped United hierarchy reportedly aims to invest in younger signings who are ready to make an immediate impact but won’t break the bank.
Osimhen is expected to be available for £58 million this summer, with Napoli prepared to offload him permanently once he returns from Istanbul.
That fee, which is lower than the £72 million spent on signing Hojlund from Atalanta in 2023, could be seen as a bargain.
However, INEOS has pledged to address the issues caused by expensive flops over the past decade and will support Amorim in a different way.
United spent heavily last summer to back Erik ten Hag amid months of job uncertainty. Yet, Noussair Mazraoui was the oldest recruit, at 26.
The January acquisition of 20-year-old Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu for £25 million provided a glimpse of the type of signings to expect at the beginning of Amorim’s tenure.
