Man Utd consider shock deadline day move for Premier League star

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United (Man Utd) are not actively pursuing Ivan Toney at the moment and will not consider making a move for him until the deadline day.

United began their season with a 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford last Friday and have been active in the transfer market, with more deals expected before the deadline.

The Red Devils have already secured the signings of Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, and Matthijs de Ligt, and they have also been in discussions with Paris Saint-Germain regarding midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Although they have signed Zirkzee, United have still been linked with Toney, who was excluded from Brentford’s squad during their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, Plettenberg has provided an update on United’s position, stating that the club is not currently planning to approach the 28-year-old until closer to the deadline.

He shared this update on X.com, saying: “Told again that Manchester United currently not considering to sign Ivan #Toney until Deadline Day! No approach is planned yet. Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee should play regularly.

“#MUFC 28 y/o striker from Brentford, one to watch in the next 13 days with many requests and a strong interest from Saudi.”

Toney, who has one year remaining on his contract, is expected to leave Brentford this summer. However, nothing has been finalized, despite strong interest from Saudi club Al-Ahli, who reportedly had a £35m offer rejected last week.

It’s surprising that no clubs have made a significant move to sign Toney this late in the transfer window, although they may be waiting in hopes of securing a discounted deal closer to the deadline.

United currently have Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund as their striker options, with Marcus Rashford also capable of playing centrally.

It remains unclear how much they need Toney, but if they decide to pursue him, he would offer them a different dimension in attack.
