“In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two,” said Amorim. “Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me.
“We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”
Sources close to The Athletic revealed that a TV used for pre-game tactical discussions was the target of Amorim’s anger.
Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell shared his insights about the dressing room incident on the Stretford Paddock on Wednesday.
“As far as our information… Ruben Amorim damaged that [the TV] in what we think was a pretty furious critique of his team after the Brighton game,” said Whitwell.
“It’s notable, a pretty emotional reaction I think, possibly a calculated one to shock the players,” he added.
“He’s talked about wanting to jolt people at the club.”
Whitwell further elaborated that Amorim’s reaction was particularly striking because he is typically silent post-match. He tends to confer with his coaching staff and then addresses the players the following day at United’s Carrington training ground.
“The performance against Brighton changed things and he felt the need to be very vocal with his reaction,” Whitwell explained.
Manchester United will return to the pitch on Thursday as they host Rangers in the Europa League at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s alleged reaction has drawn comparisons to Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at the club.
Ferguson, now 83, was renowned for his direct approach in addressing problems with players in the dressing room. This was famously demonstrated when he kicked a boot after United’s FA Cup match against Arsenal in 2003, which accidentally struck David Beckham, leaving the now 49-year-old with a cut above his left eye.
