Skipper Bruno Fernandes netted a brace to secure a 2-1 win for Rúben Amorim’s side, while Jarrod Bowen grabbed a goal for West Ham.
Although United came out on top, Mason Mount, who came on for new signing Matheus Cunha in the 66th minute drew criticism from fans for his underwhelming display.
Reacting on social media, one fan said: “Mason Mount is a liability, sell him now before it’s too late.”
Another tweeted: “I’m sorry but Mason Mount is terrible. Can’t believe he is wearing the number 7.”
A third fan added: “The fact that he is still here is shambolic. Whoever gave him the 7 shirt needs to be rehired & sacked countless times that as to go down as one of the worse decisions in the club history.”
Someone else wrote: “Mason Mount should’ve been in that “Gang of 5”.”
A fifth commented: “What are we actually going to do with Mason Mount? So many players are just here taking up space.”
Another fan said: “Mason Mount.. no words.”
Before making the move to Manchester United, Mount stood out at his childhood team Chelsea, where he found the net 33 times in 195 games.
He transferred to United during the 2023 summer window, with the club paying £60 million to secure his services.
Since then, the 26-year-old has struggled with recurring injuries, which have prevented him from consistently performing at his peak.
To date, Mount has scored just four goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils.
Speaking after the game, United manager Amorim said: “We need to prepare all the players, and we don’t have a lot of weeks or a lot of games to prepare all the team.
“That can change, you saw in the second half, there are players who can play in the first game. It’s not a decision I made already.”
Man United are back in action next week when they face Bournemouth the Soldier Field in Chicago.
