New arrival Bryan Mbeumo found the net in the 32nd minute, giving United a well-earned 1-0 advantage.
During the second half, Thomas Frank’s squad pressed for a leveller and were successful in the 84th minute when substitute Mathys Tel scored to bring the game to 1-1.
In added time, Richarlison shocked United by putting Spurs ahead 2-1. But United responded swiftly, with Matthijs De Ligt heading in a dramatic equaliser to end the match 2-2.
Online reactions from United fans showed frustration over a tactical choice made by Ruben Amorim.
Many expressed discontent with Amorim’s decision to position Mbeumo on the left hand side.
One fan said: “Amorim has costed United this game what was Mbeumo still doing at the Left hand side.”
Another tweeted: “Mbeumo is still on the left and Cunha on the right with Sesko on. I don’t understand what Amorim is cooking here.”
A third fan added: “This is Amorim’s worst performance of the season probably. Not talking about the team, but just the manager. Why was Mbeumo playing on the left all game? That was such a huge mistake.”
Someone else wrote: “I don’t get the decision to play Mbeumo on the left though.”
A fifth commented: “Why was Mbeumo kept on the left flank when Sesko was introduced? You clearly saw Cunha was sloppy today..all you had to do was introduce Mount or Zirkzee on time.”
Another fan said: “Mbeumo won player of the month playing fron the right. Next game we play him on the left even when we lacked control. We should have won this game and attacked this Spurs defence more. Another chance missed. Smh.”
The result saw Spurs climb to third in the Premier League standings, while United dropped to seventh.
