Fabrizio Romano reports that La Liga rejected Barcelona’s appeal to register Olmo and Pau Victor.
Consequently, the club has applied for new player licences for the duo with the Spanish FA (Rfef), as they continue to navigate their ongoing financial troubles.
Olmo’s future has been uncertain for several months, and both Manchester clubs have been heavily linked with a potential move for the Spanish star.
In a statement released by Hansi Flick’s side, it said: “Barcelona informs that it has applied for a new licence for the players Daniel Olmo and Pau Victor to the Rfef.
“The club would like to deny having requested or receiving any moratorium to any governing body for these inscriptions.”
But the Catalan club were issued with a response from La Liga which says the club “have not provided any alternative that, in compliance with La Liga’s economic control regulations, would allow them to register any player” as of January 2.
As a consequence, Olmo and Victor might be considered free agents, though they could still be registered by Barcelona before the January transfer window closes, provided the financial requirements are met.
However, Rfef regulations stipulate that a player cannot be signed by the same club twice in the same season.
Olmo, who is 26 years old, has a clause in his contract that permits him to leave unilaterally if the club fails to register him.
Despite this, he posted a cryptic message on Instagram celebrating the new year, seemingly indicating his intention to build on his five goals in the Spanish top-flight so far.
His post prompted a response from his teammates Lamine Yamal and Inigo Martinez, who commented, ‘Olmo is a culer’ and clock emojis respectively.
