Man Utd stance on Darwin Nunez outlined as Van Gaal warns Jurrien Timber

Manchester United are reluctant to get drawn into a bidding war with Liverpool over the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

Both teams are interested in the 22-year-old this summer and reports on Merseyside on Wednesday claimed Liverpool would have to break their transfer record to sign the Uruguayan.

Nunez has been valued at €100m (£85million) by Benfica this summer and the Portuguese side would benefit from huge transfer interest from two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Meanwhile, Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has advised United target Jurrien Timber to stay at Ajax this summer, but believes he has the credentials to play in the Premier League.

Timber, who can operate at both right-back and centre-back, is on United’s radar ahead of the transfer window officially opening on Friday.

Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is believed to be keen on reuniting with the 20-year-old, who is among his leading targets.

Liverpool will need to replace Sadio Mane if he completes a move to Bayern and Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Nunez, who scored in both legs of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between the two teams this campaign.
