Now finalized, Cunha has signed a five-year contract with United, with an option to extend his stay for an additional year.
His arrival follows the club’s decision to activate his £62.5 million release clause, making him a key addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Cunha as one of the most exciting and effective forwards in English football.
The former Atletico Madrid striker brings both goal-scoring ability and athleticism, having netted 17 goals across all competitions last season, including 15 in the Premier League.
Despite securing Cunha, United are still looking to strengthen their attack further, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo emerging as their next target.
Just a day after confirming Cunha’s signing, United learned that Mbeumo had chosen Old Trafford as his preferred destination. The club submitted an initial £55 million bid for the Cameroonian forward, but Brentford rejected the offer.
Negotiations remain ongoing, and United are optimistic about reaching an agreement in time for Mbeumo to join pre-season training at Carrington in early July.
Beyond Mbeumo, United are also determined to bring in a new striker. Their top target, Liam Delap, opted to join Chelsea, forcing the club to explore alternative options.
Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen have both been linked with a move, as United seek a proven goal-scorer to lead their attack. Gyokeres is eager to leave Sporting, while Napoli are open to selling Osimhen.
With significant spending already committed to Cunha and potentially Mbeumo, United will need to offload players to finance a striker signing.
In addition to reinforcing their attack, United are also looking to strengthen their midfield. Christian Eriksen is set to depart when his contract expires, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.
Casemiro, now entering the final year of his contract, could be sold as United adjust their squad following their failure to qualify for European competition.
The club is also considering a move for a new goalkeeper, as doubts persist over Altay Bayindir’s future. Amorim is keen to bring in a shot-stopper capable of competing with Andre Onana for the No.1 position.
