United offered little resistance and now sit 14th in the Premier League table, having collected just four points from their first four matches—despite investing over £230 million during the summer.
High-profile signings like Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo were brought in to bolster the attack, but the team lacked cutting edge against City, with Sesko’s ineffective display drawing criticism.
This marks United’s poorest start to a season since the 1992/93 campaign.
Since taking over from Erik ten Hag last November, Amorim has only managed eight wins in 31 league fixtures.
After the latest defeat, he remained firm in his tactical approach, stating he would stick with his 3-4-2-1 system regardless of the mounting pressure and disappointing results.
“I won’t change my philosophy,” Amorim said. “If they [United hierarchy] want it changed, you change the man.”
Ruben Amorim’s recent remarks have intensified debate over his future at Manchester United, raising questions about whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family might dismiss yet another manager.
Despite United enduring their worst season start in over three decades, Amorim reportedly still has the backing of the club’s leadership, according to journalist Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News.
The 40-year-old coach remains under contract until 2027, and there are currently no formal plans to relieve him of his duties.
Nevertheless, a source close to Amorim expressed disbelief to the MEN, calling it “incredible” that his job isn’t under serious scrutiny.
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol echoed that sentiment, noting that Ratcliffe hasn’t lost faith in Amorim just yet—but warned that a slide toward relegation could force a change in direction.
“If they carry on the way they have started, they will probably end up where they finished last season – in the middle of the bottom half of the table,” wrote Solhekol.
“And if that is the case, it is likely that INEOS will make a change at the top – just as they did last October when United were 14th.”
