Manchester United’s position on Ruben Amorim’s future had already been a topic of discussion before their shocking Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town.

With Blundell Park packed to the rafters, the hosts raced to a 2-0 lead before half-time through goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.
In response, Amorim turned to his star players in the second half, introducing Matthijs de Ligt, Bruno Fernandes, and Bryan Mbeumo, followed by Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee.
Mbeumo pulled one back in the 75th minute, and Harry Maguire equalized with a late header in the 88th.
But after a dramatic penalty shootout, Mbeumo’s miss handed Grimsby a 12-11 victory and a place in the third round.
The defeat marked United’s third winless outing to start the 2025/26 season, following a loss to Arsenal and a draw with Fulham in the league.
With performances faltering, Amorim’s position is now under renewed scrutiny.
Earlier in May, prior to United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham, reports suggested the club had no intention of sacking Amorim, even if the result went against them.
According to The Times, his role was considered secure unless he chose to step down.
But with the new season already marred by setbacks, pressure is mounting.
United return to Premier League action this Saturday at Old Trafford, where they’ll face Burnley in a match that could further shape Amorim’s fate.
