So far, they’ve collected seven points from six Premier League fixtures and have let in 11 goals.
Amorim’s men were beaten 3-1 by Brentford last Saturday, intensifying scrutiny on the Portuguese coach.
BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reported following the match that United were not currently considering parting ways with Amorim, with minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe inclined to offer him more time.
In the days that followed, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, and Fulham’s Marco Silva have emerged as names linked to the position should Amorim exit.
Although playing a newly-promoted team at home might typically offer a chance for redemption, Sunderland made smart moves during the transfer window and sit fifth after a strong start under Regis Le Bris.
They secured victory at Nottingham Forest last Saturday and have also beaten Brentford and West Ham at home.
Now, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has reiterated earlier claims that Amorim will remain in charge regardless of Saturday’s outcome at Old Trafford.
This stance holds even though a loss could drop United to as low as 16th in the standings depending on other results.
“I think it is a big match, and I certainly think that Ruben Amorim needs a positive result. They need to beat Sunderland,” Whitwell said on the ‘Talk of the Devils’ podcast.
“From speaking to people, even if they lost to Sunderland, I don’t think it would be the end for Ruben Amorim.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the ultimate decision maker on this, really. I know he will take recommendations from Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, and the Glazers certainly have a voice on this as well. Joel Glazer, in particular, I imagine will have an opinion.
“But Ratcliffe is the one to decide. And I’m told he wants to give Amorim a full season, because it’s a new squad to a degree, it’s him trying to get his methods across even more. We can debate whether that’s the right choice or not, but that’s the messaging from the very top.”
