According to reports, United will part ways with Amorim if results don’t improve and the team fails to break free from mid-table obscurity in the Premier League next season.
Despite a perceived long-term vision for the 40-year-old at the helm, it’s believed that the club won’t tolerate the current poor run of form beyond this season.
Having left one of Europe’s top clubs for a team in disarray, Amorim’s early results reflect the challenging task he faces in trying to steady the ship at Old Trafford.
There’s a broad consensus that Amorim requires time to reshape the squad through the transfer market and to implement his intricate 3-4-3 formation.
However, according to The Athletic, United won’t offer the Portuguese coach an extended period if his side continues to suffer consistent defeats.
The report further states that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford, and Omar Berrada are keen for the Amorim appointment to succeed in order to avoid further negative press.
However, it is claimed that if the club sits in 13th place at this point next season, it would be unacceptable to a regime focused on challenging for the Premier League title by 2028.
The Red Devils’ 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday marked their 11th defeat in 29 games under Amorim’s leadership.
United’s ongoing struggles are clear, with Amorim winning just six of his 19 Premier League matches, suffering nine losses, and facing a challenging schedule ahead.
In a series of candid interviews in March, Sir Jim expressed strong support for Amorim, acknowledging the difficult situation he inherited.
“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” the INEOS kingpin explained.
“I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager, and I think he will be there for a long time.
“You are beginning to see a glimpse of what Ruben can produce. I think you saw a glimpse of it against Arsenal.
“How many players against Arsenal on the bench did you recognise? How many have ever worn a Manchester United shirt for [the first team]… as there’s no squad left?
“We are down to the last 10 or 11 men in the squad, really, of proper first-team players. Ruben is doing a super job.
“He is, as most great coaches are, an emotional character. Ruben is not perfect, but I am a great supporter of Ruben.”
