Altay Bayindir 6: Struggled in the losses to Arsenal and Burnley but showed improvement against Brentford. Appears to have lost his starting spot.
Senne Lammens 8: Impressed in his debut during the 2-0 win over Sunderland and seems set to stay ahead of Bayindir. Confident in goal, good with both feet, and distributes well.
Defenders
Luke Shaw 6: Has had a mixed start. Roy Keane slammed him for “stealing a living” after a poor showing in the 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City. He excelled against Chelsea, dipped again at Brentford, and improved versus Sunderland. Needs consistency.
Harry Maguire 6: Another inconsistent performer. Solid against Chelsea but responsible for Brentford’s opener in the 3-1 defeat. Dropped for the Sunderland match and is struggling to cement his place in the back three.
Matthijs De Ligt 8: United’s most dependable defender so far, playing every minute. Whether central or on the right, his positioning and defensive strength have stood out.
Leny Yoro 7: Established himself as the first-choice on the right of the back three, though puzzlingly benched against Chelsea and Brentford. Calm under pressure and technically sound.
Diogo Dalot 6: Started at right wing-back and assisted Mbeumo’s goal against Burnley. Missed games due to injury and returned against Brentford, where two goals came from his flank. Inconsistent.
Patrick Dorgu 5: Started five of seven league games but hasn’t convinced as a left wing-back. Needs to improve his final ball. Despite 12 touches in the opposition box during the derby, he couldn’t make them count.
Noussair Mazraou 6: Injured and limited to two league starts. United miss his physicality and ability to play out from the back.
Ayden Heaven 5: Has barely featured — just three minutes in the league and 64 in the EFL Cup loss to Grimsby. Game time has been scarce.
Midfielders
Casemiro 6: Sent off for reckless fouls just before half-time in the Chelsea win, nullifying United’s numerical advantage after Robert Sanchez’s early red. Amorim has preferred him over Mainoo and Ugarte, but his aggressive tackling is a concern.
Bruno Fernandes 6: Struggled in a deeper role next to Casemiro, away from his usual attacking position. Missed two of his last three penalties.
Mason Mount 7: After two injury-hit seasons, this could be his breakout year. Scored a brilliant opener against Sunderland and earned a standing ovation when subbed. Needs to stay fit.
Manuel Ugarte 4: Surprisingly started the derby ahead of Casemiro and was easily bypassed by City. Similar issues arose at Brentford. Unlikely to remain at the club long-term.
Kobbie Mainoo 5: Still waiting for his first league start. His loan request was denied, and limited minutes make it hard to judge his form. A poor touch led to Brentford’s third goal after he came on.
Forwards
Matheus Cunha 6: Hasn’t hit the ground running after his £65m move from Wolves. Injured during the Burnley win, returned at Brentford, and won a penalty that Fernandes missed. Mount’s return puts his spot at risk.
Bryan Mbeumo 8: United’s standout summer signing. Since his £71m switch from Brentford, he’s added pace and directness to the attack. Two goals and one assist don’t fully reflect his influence.
Benjamin Sesko 7: Took time to settle but has scored in back-to-back games. United are playing to his strengths with long balls and relying on his instincts in the box.
Amad 6: Hasn’t matched last season’s form and missed the Brentford game due to a family bereavement. Showed promise against Sunderland and nearly scored.
Joshua Zirkzee 5: Limited opportunities due to the arrivals of Cunha, Mbeumo, and Sesko. Has made just three substitute appearances in the league.
