However, offloading the Danish forward has proven challenging, especially after he turned down a switch to the Bundesliga.
In fact, Hojlund has now expressed his desire to stay and compete for his spot at Old Trafford, despite interest from several top European sides — a decision that could limit United’s budget for new signings.
Still, that hasn’t stopped the Red Devils from making a bold move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, submitting a £74 million offer as they ramp up efforts to land the striker.
According to GiveMeSport, United have now agreed personal terms with Sesko, even as Newcastle United entered the race with a £78 million bid of their own.
Sources close to the situation claim Sesko has chosen Old Trafford over St. James’ Park, and Ornstein confirmed on Wednesday that negotiations between the clubs are progressing well, with a deal nearly finalized.
Sesko — described as “special” — could be the missing piece for United’s attack. With Joshua Zirkzee and Hojlund failing to impress since joining, manager Ruben Amorim is clearly in need of a reliable frontman, and the Leipzig star fits the bill.
Christian Vivell, former technical director at Leipzig, once praised Sesko’s unique talent, and the Slovenian forward backed it up with 21 goals across all competitions last season.
His blistering pace adds another dimension to United’s frontline — clocking a top speed of 35.69 km/h, he’s even quicker than Alejandro Garnacho, who hit 35.48 km/h.
The only lingering doubt is whether Sesko can adapt to the Premier League, raising concerns he might follow in Hojlund’s footsteps. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins has been floated as a backup option.
But with Watkins now 29, taking a chance on the 22-year-old Sesko seems worthwhile — especially given his consistent performances in the Bundesliga, compared to Hojlund’s modest return of nine goals in 32 Serie A matches before his move to Manchester.
