Man Utd reason for paying above Joshua Zirkzee’s release clause becomes clear

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to pay Bologna a transfer fee greater than Joshua Zirkzee’s release clause to spread their payment for the player over three years.

The striker will be the first signing for the Red Devils during the INEOS era after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority shareholder in February.

United had a poor season previously but have supported Erik ten Hag to remain as manager following his success in leading the team to an FA Cup victory.

The Dutch manager is eager to bring in more talent to his squad to compete for trophies on all fronts next season.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United will pay Bologna nearly £36 million for Zirkzee after opting not to meet his £34 million release clause. This decision allows them to avoid paying the full amount upfront.

Zirkzee is expected to undergo a medical examination at United on Friday and will sign a contract to stay at Old Trafford until the summer of 2029, with an option for an additional year.

He will compete with Rasmus Hojlund for a spot in the Red Devils lineup when the new Premier League season starts next month.

Zirkzee, who was part of the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024, progressed through Bayern Munich’s youth system after spending time at the academies of Spartaan 20, ADO Den Haag, and Feyenoord in the Netherlands.

After loan spells at Parma and Anderlecht, the 23-year-old joined Bologna on a permanent basis two years ago, having made only 17 first-team appearances for Bayern Munich.

He scored twice in his first season in Italy but improved last season with 12 goals and seven assists in 37 matches.

His performances attracted the interest of many clubs, with United ultimately winning the transfer race.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Zirkzee will bring a physical presence to the Red Devils’ attack, comparable to some of the best strikers in Premier League history.

His technical ability has also been praised for its creativity and flair.

United are focused on finalizing the deal as soon as possible, with the 13-time Premier League champions heading to Norway over the weekend before their tour of the USA at the end of the month.

Ten Hag’s team will then kick off their Premier League campaign in mid-August when they host Fulham.
