Man Utd to receive millions from Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea transfer

Manchester United are set to receive £4m in sell-on fees as a result of Romelu Lukaku’s impending transfer to Chelsea.

The Belgian international is set to return to Stamford Bridge after Inter Milan agreed a fee in the region of £97.5m with Chelsea.

Lukaku spent three seasons at Chelsea between 2011 and 2014, but only played 15 matches for them before joining Everton.

The 28-year-old then moved to the Red devils for £75m in 2017 before being sold to Inter Milan two years later for £73m. He is now expected to re-sign for Chelsea after successfully helping the Italian side win the Serie A title last campaign.

And while one of the best strikers in Europe will be joining Chelsea, the deal will also benefit United after they inserted a four percent sell-on clause into his contract when they sold him to Inter in 2019.

The money will boost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side who are looking to sell before making more signings after the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer.

The deal for Lukaku wasn’t a straight forward one, the Belgian was in no rush to leave Milan, while the Serie A giants were holding out for a fee of more than £100m despite having financial issues amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chelsea also offered a player-plus-cash deal which included Marcos Alonso heading to the San Siro, but Inter rejected the offer.

However, late last week both teams finally agreed a fee which would see Lukaku return to England, with the striker requesting to be allowed to leave.

The deal could also favour Manchester United in their search for a new striker, too.

With Chelsea tying up a deal for Lukaku and Man City eyeing a move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane, it means United would have less competition if they attempt to sign Dortmund’s Erling Haaland next summer.
