The reason Man Utd rejected chance to sign Jamal Musiala after being ‘offered’ Bayern star

New information has surfaced about Manchester United’s interest in Jamal Musiala following the German star’s impressive performances at Euro 2024.

Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder Musiala has been one of the standout players of the tournament, netting three goals in four games.

He scored in Germany’s 2-0 victory over Denmark in the round of 16, setting up a quarter-final match against Spain on Friday.

The former England youth international is now heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with his former club Chelsea and current champions Manchester City reportedly showing interest in the 21-year-old.

However, reports from earlier this year indicate that Bayern Munich is unwilling to let Musiala go for less than £100 million, a price that is likely to increase due to his performances at the Euros.

According to The Athletic, United had the chance to sign Musiala on trial in 2018 before he left Chelsea’s academy but decided not to pursue him.

United youth scout Andreas Herrmann reportedly watched him at a Germany training camp and considered him the best player.

“Musiala was weighing up which nation to represent. But there were complications with the deal and United, conscious of regulations, decided that entering the running would be too risky,” added the report.

Musiala initially played for England’s U15 team before moving to Germany’s U16 squad.

The Stuttgart-born player, eligible for England through his mother, then returned to represent England at U16, U17, and U21 levels before ultimately choosing to play for Germany at the senior level.

He has since earned 33 caps for the German national team and scored five goals.

The Sun reports that Musiala was on the verge of committing to England’s senior team before former Germany coach Joachim Low convinced him to switch allegiance.

Andrew Martin, a former coach of Musiala, said: “It was always going to be England. He felt more at home there, he played for Chelsea and there were other Chelsea boys in the England squad, and he knew others from playing on the academy circuit.

“I remember at the time Jamal went to meet Jogi Low and the academy director at Bayern. They made a clear pathway of how he would get into the Bayern first team and the German first team.

“I think once you meet the first-team manager as a 16, 17-year-old, I think your decision is made for you. That’s pretty impressive that they made the time to do that.

“He wanted it to be England but then it was the move to Germany that swayed everything, with the help of Low and the help of the Bayern set-up.”
