The pressure continues to mount on Amorim and the club, who are enduring their worst start to a Premier League campaign in over three decades, following a comprehensive loss to Manchester City in the derby. ..Continue Reading
It marked yet another damaging setback for a manager widely viewed as one of the most under-fire figures in top-level football right now.
Since succeeding Erik ten Hag last November, Amorim has managed only eight wins in 31 league outings, giving him the poorest win rate of any permanent United boss since the end of World War II.
Although the United board recently offered public backing, insisting they are not currently looking to make a managerial change, that stance may be shifting behind the scenes.
According to The Mirror, Amorim effectively has a three-game window to prove he’s still the right man for the job, after collecting just four points from the team’s first four league fixtures this season.
“Despite privately insisting they still have faith in Amorim, United’s football leadership team gave the same assurances to Erik ten Hag, before pulling the plug on him nine league games into last season,” the report adds.
Manchester United are set to host unbeaten Chelsea at Old Trafford this Saturday, followed by a challenging away fixture against Brentford on September 27.
After that, they face newly-promoted Sunderland in what could prove to be a make-or-break match for Ruben Amorim at home.
Gareth Southgate has once again been linked with the United job, just as he was last year.
Back in March 2024, it was reported that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had identified the former England manager as his preferred choice to succeed Erik ten Hag at the time.
Also among the names being considered are Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola and Fulham’s Marco Silva—both of whom have previously been connected to the role.
According to The Mirror, Mauricio Pochettino is another strong contender if Amorim is shown the door.
The Argentine, now leading the United States national team, has been repeatedly linked with United in the past, and his representatives reportedly held talks with the club after his Chelsea departure in 2024.
