However, the spotlight shifted to the tension between him and Onana after the Serbian midfielder fired back at Onana’s claim that United were the superior team, branding him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.”
In a statement on X, Onana hit back by bringing up Matic’s lack of trophies with Man United, “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
However, the ex-Inter Milan goalkeeper’s words backfired after he committed two major blunders in the 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium—one of which was a late spill that allowed Rayan Cherki to score a 95th-minute equaliser.
Matic remained on the bench for Lyon and didn’t seem to exchange any words or gestures with Onana.
After the final whistle, though, he was seen in the dressing room with some of the Manchester United staff members he previously worked with during his time at Old Trafford.
Matic shared the snap on Instagram, with the caption “Nice to see my brothers again”.
The post was liked by current club captain Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa after being sidelined by Ruben Amorim.
Former Manchester United players including David De Gea, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, and Alvaro Fernandez also interacted with the post.
Matic later shared another update on his Instagram story, featuring a photo of his son, Filip, surrounded by jerseys from several of his father’s former teammates—among them Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Amad.
Notably, Filip was pictured holding the shirt of United’s third-choice goalkeeper, Tom Heaton.
Onana faced intense backlash for his two errors during the match, bringing his total to nine mistakes that have directly led to goals this season.
But, Amorim refrained from laying into the Cameroonian – stating, “When one game has a mistake the whole team has a mistake”.
Asked if he would consider dropping his goalkeeper, Amorim said: “No, we’ll continue to do the same thing in training, seeing the game and trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”
