Zirkzee, who was introduced by Ruben Amorim early in the second half, delivered an impressive performance off the bench.
However, it was Amad who grabbed the spotlight with a stunning 12-minute hat-trick that rescued United from a potential defeat against the league’s bottom team.
Southampton had taken the lead before halftime and had several opportunities to extend their advantage. United fought back but needed a moment of brilliance from Amad to turn the tide. He completed his remarkable hat-trick in injury time, securing a crucial and much-needed victory for Amorim.
This win marks United’s third unbeaten game across all competitions this week, a feat Amorim last achieved at the start of his tenure.
Despite the victory, United remains in the lower half of the table. For Zirkzee, who had a standout performance against Arsenal last weekend, his reaction to Amad’s second goal could land him in serious trouble.
During the wild celebrations, Zirkzee joined Amad and his teammates, leaping into the air with a fist pump. He then turned to the crowd and grabbed his crotch with his right hand, nodding as he did so.
This action, following his machine gun celebration at the Emirates Stadium after his winning penalty last week, may have serious repercussions.
According to Hackett, a fine and a suspension will be coming his way. “I expect the Football Association to charge the player for his rather stupid celebration act,” he told Football Insider.
“Doing this in front of the supporters will certainly result in a fine and a strong possibility of a minimum three-match ban. The FA have to take into account that actions of this nature incite the fans and can easily create fans surging forward and potential crushing injuries. A young man who will not doubt receive some operational advice from his club and management.”
Since joining Manchester United in the summer, Zirkzee has faced a challenging period, managing to score only three league goals in 21 matches.
His tally across all competitions stands at four goals. Adapting to life in England has not been smooth for him, and he even faced boos from his own supporters last month.
Zirkzee hopes that this week could mark a turning point at Old Trafford, especially amidst widespread transfer rumors.
However, if Keith Hackett’s prediction holds true, Zirkzee might have to spend some time on the sidelines before he can resume his quest for success.
