A Manchester United (Man Utd) player may have stirred tensions with Erik ten Hag after liking an Instagram post highlighting Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent criticism of the manager.
Ronaldo has reignited his conflict with Ten Hag, following several disputes they had at Old Trafford during the early part of the 2022/23 season.
This tension peaked when the iconic forward publicly criticized Ten Hag, his teammates, and the club’s owners in a Piers Morgan interview, just before his departure to the Saudi Pro League.
Since Ronaldo left, Ten Hag has secured victories in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, but United’s performances in both the Premier League and European competitions have been poor, with last season’s eighth-place finish marking their worst in history.
In July, Ten Hag admitted the team was still far from competing with top sides like Manchester City and Arsenal for the title.
During an interview on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Ronaldo agreed but also expressed that Ten Hag shouldn’t have made such a statement publicly.
It appears one current United player shares Ronaldo’s view, as Alejandro Garnacho liked an Instagram post by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano that featured some of Ronaldo’s comments.
Specifically, the quotes were: ‘Man United coach cannot say they can’t compete to win the Premier League and the Champions League every year.
‘This is Man United! You have to be there, to mentally say… listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.
‘This is why Man United need to rebuild. If Ten Hag listens to Ruud van Nistelrooy [United coach] maybe he can help. He knows the club and the club should listen the guys who were there, as this is really important.
‘Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Sir Alex Ferguson… you need advice from this people. You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge.’
Garnacho later unliked the post but was too late to prevent supporters from noticing and this is not the first time the Argentina international has taken to social media to criticise his manager.
Back in April, the youngster liked two Twitter posts that slammed Ten Hag for subbing Garnacho off at half-time of Man United’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
Whether the 20-year-old winger faces any repercussions from the club or his manager remains to be seen with United next in action on Saturday when they travel to Southampton.
