With Ruben Amorim now three months into his tenure, he likely has a clearer idea of his preferred squad, formation, and starting XI. However, it appears he will have to manage without a defender for the rest of the 2024/25 season.
Voetbal International reports that Tyrell Malacia has agreed to go out on loan until the end of the season, having made just two Premier League appearances this term.
The report does not specify Malacia’s destination, but journalist Joost Blaauwhof indicates that “sources close to the player” confirm he will depart United during the January transfer window.
Malacia, 25, joined United from Feyenoord for £13 million in the summer of 2022. During his first season, he made 39 appearances and was a key player for Erik ten Hag during the 2022/23 campaign.
However, he has struggled with fitness and missed 17 months due to a serious knee injury before returning in an Under-21s EFL Trophy match against Huddersfield in November.
Later that month, he returned to the senior squad, starting as a left-wing back in the 3-2 Europa League win over Bodo/Glimt, with Amorim praising his performance, saying the Dutchman did “really well.”
“It was huge for him, the confidence of everybody, I think he did really well,” he told MUTV. “It was more than a year without playing and the way he behaved, so brave with the ball, I’m really happy with him.”
It remains uncertain whether Manchester United will seek a replacement for Malacia.
However, reports from Caught Offside indicate that Amorim is interested in acquiring Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri. Despite this interest, Ait-Nouri’s price tag is expected to be high, with Transfermarkt valuing him at around £30 million. The 23-year-old is under contract with Wolves until the end of the 2025/26 season.
In December, the United manager addressed the possibility of new signings, acknowledging that this could be a challenging task.
“We don’t have that possibility [to make signing] in January if we don’t take some players [out],” said Amorim [via BBC Sport].
“You know the situation better than me. “It is not that I am arriving here and know I can spend money changing the team.”
