It’s already been a transformative summer at Old Trafford, with Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof leaving on free deals, and Jonny Evans announcing his retirement. ..Continue Reading
Rashford added to the list of exits on Wednesday, joining Barcelona on a season-long loan that includes a £30 million purchase option at the end of the campaign.
Manager Ruben Amorim has already reshaped the squad by bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon as he prepares for his first full season in charge.
Now, speculation surrounds Luke Shaw, who may be ready to end his long stint at United after spending 11 years with the club.
Shaw arrived from Southampton in 2014 for £30 million and has featured in 287 matches, though his time has been plagued by recurring injuries.
With Diego Leon now competing for the left-back spot alongside Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot, and Shaw’s fitness under scrutiny, reports suggest he’s open to offers.
Unlike fringe players such as Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia, Shaw remains integrated with the squad and is well-liked in the dressing room.
He played in United’s opening friendly against Leeds and is currently part of the squad touring the United States, where they’ll face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton. He’s also reportedly aware of interest from Saudi clubs.
Although Amorim isn’t actively pushing for his departure, Shaw may be forced to consider his future as he approaches the twilight of his career.
Last season, he made just 12 appearances across all competitions due to a calf injury that sidelined him for three months.
He did return for the Europa League final loss to Tottenham and spoke candidly about United’s disappointing campaign, which ended with a 15th-place finish and no silverware.
“We’re very sorry for what they have had to go through this season. Like I said, it’s been nowhere near good enough, and I can only apologise for that,” Shaw said to the BBC after the 1-0 loss in Bilbao.
“It hurts a lot. This season has not been good enough. Us as players, we have to question if we’re good enough for Man United because this season is not acceptable.
“Where we are in the league, the results we’ve had, it’s not acceptable for a club like Manchester United that has won multiple trophies and always been one of the biggest teams in the world.
“After results like this [against Tottenham], the season we’ve had, we have to question ourselves. It’s about where we go from here. Ruben for sure has a plan. He knows exactly what’s needed at this club. He’ll turn it around.”
Man United are back in action on Sunday when they take on West Ham in their first ‘Premier League Summer Series’ game at the Metlife Stadium.
