Following a difficult December in which United suffered five defeats, the struggles continued into January.
Amorim’s situation worsened when Brighton secured a 3-1 win at Old Trafford, with ex-United forward Danny Welbeck finding the net and Andre Onana committing another costly error.
Unable to contain his anger, Amorim delivered a fierce reprimand to his players and smashed a TV in the dressing room as his frustration boiled over after yet another humiliating home result.
Yet, his fiery display struck a chord with several members of the squad.
They recognized the depth of his commitment as he expressed his dismay at their predicament, with some reportedly developing greater respect for the former Sporting coach, according to the Telegraph.
That same Sunday, Amorim made headlines when he boldly claimed his team were “maybe the worst” in the club’s 147-year existence as they teetered on the edge of a relegation scrap. The United boss admitted: “In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two.
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United.
“I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”
Amorim’s agitation was again evident during the clash with Everton in February, just weeks after the Brighton setback. He was visibly furious at halftime, with United trailing 2-0 at Goodison Park.
He made only a brief appearance in the dressing room before stepping back out. Amorim spent most of the break pacing the hallway, eyes locked on the ground.
It was Darren Fletcher, then serving as first-team coach, who took charge of the team talk, delivering some tough messages. The players responded, managing to claw back a 2-2 draw.
