Since David De Gea’s departure, United have struggled to find a dependable presence between the posts. Both Onana and Altay Bayindir have failed to deliver consistent performances in a team already grappling with broader issues. ..Continue Reading
Onana is now on the verge of completing a loan switch to Trabzonspor, with the Turkish transfer window still open and all signs pointing to a deal being finalized shortly.
As United prepare for Sunday’s clash with Manchester City, they’re expected to hand a first start to 23-year-old Senne Lammens. The young Belgian has been earmarked as a potential long-term fix for the club’s ongoing goalkeeping dilemma.
Although Onana remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, some insiders believe his exit marks the unofficial end of his tenure with the club.
“Although it is a straight loan, he is effectively ending his United career with this switch,” writes Whitwell. “An Old Trafford return after a season of Super Lig football is highly unlikely.”
While Amorim had promoted Bayindir to first choice at Onana’s expense, neither was able to pin down the place with anything approaching competence in the early part of this season.
The Man United hierarchy weren’t planning to sign a new goalkeeper until Amorim’s frustration with Onana grew in pre-season.
“Amorim’s strength of personality can be seen again in Onana’s exit from United,” reports Whitwell.
“Circumstances changed when Onana returned for pre-season. His hamstring injury, picked up on the first day at Carrington, and an expectation that he would remain No 1, left Amorim dissatisfied.
“Despite expecting to play, Onana was left out of the squad to face Arsenal, and Amorim kept him on the bench against Fulham and Burnley either side of the blunders [against Grimsby Town] at Blundell Park.”
With Senne Lammens now part of the squad and Andre Onana nearing a departure, Manchester United are hoping for greater stability between the posts as the Premier League season unfolds.
Onana, who previously played for Ajax and Inter Milan, has found himself under scrutiny during the international break for a series of unfortunate events.
Cameroon suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cape Verde in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier—a result that pushed the Blue Sharks four points ahead in their group and left Cameroon’s hopes of advancing to the next round hanging by a thread.
Criticism was directed at Onana for his role in the decisive goal, as he failed to come off his line when Dailon Livramento broke through, allowing the Casa Pia striker to score with ease.
The match ended in further controversy when Onana clashed with a frustrated fan amid post-game celebrations.
