Despite a 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Sunday, Ten Hag retains the backing of the club’s board, though their patience is wearing thin. If United suffers two more poor results, the Dutch coach could be facing termination.
Most of the United squad still supports the under-pressure manager, but there are ongoing discussions within the team about how much longer he will remain in charge given the club’s struggles in the Premier League.
United have only managed to earn seven points from their first six games, their joint-worst start to a Premier League season.
Nevertheless, Ten Hag, who signed a one-year extension in July to keep him at the club until 2026, insists he is not worried about his job.
He said: “No, I am not thinking about this. “We all decided to stay together in the summer.”
If Manchester United sack Ten Hag, assistant boss Ruud van Nistelrooy is likely to take temporary charge.
And former United defender Rio Ferdinand is worried for the club’s future.
He said: “It doesn’t look like the United players know what the plan is because I don’t see it on the pitch.
“Six hundred million spent by Ten Hag and it’s the most inconsistent team around. That hurts me to say that.”
