Mainoo, a lifelong United supporter who progressed through the club’s youth system, is currently in a “stalemate” with the club regarding a new contract.
Concerns have also been raised about the club’s current trajectory, as they sit 13th in the Premier League.
Chelsea is thought to be leading the pursuit of Mainoo, who is contracted until 2027 and reportedly seeking new terms worth £200,000-a-week.
Mainoo and fellow prodigy Alejandro Garnacho are considered valuable assets for United, as homegrown players’ sales represent pure profit under PSR (profit and sustainability) rules.
According to The Mirror, United would only seriously consider selling Mainoo for an offer around £70 million. Manager Ruben Amorim wants to keep Mainoo and sees him as a vital part of his plans.
Negotiations are ongoing for a new deal that would elevate Mainoo into United’s top five earners following his rapid rise.
Currently, Casemiro leads the pay scale with £350,000-a-week, followed by Marcus Rashford at £325,000. Captain Bruno Fernandes earns £300,000-a-week, while Mason Mount receives £250,000-a-week since joining in 2023.
The report indicates United is optimistic about reaching an agreement that reflects Mainoo’s importance to the club. However, if negotiations falter, Chelsea remains the front-runner for his signature.
Having debuted in a Carabao Cup match against Charlton Athletic, Mainoo has made 52 appearances for United, scoring five goals. He also finished third in the 2024 Kopa Trophy, behind winner Lamine Yamal.
