Man Utd make special request to Premier League after Ronaldo transfer

Manchester United have requested special dispensation from the Premier League in order to give Cristiano Ronaldo the no.7 shirt at the club this campaign.

He completed a sensational £12.8m return to Old Trafford on deadline day, returning to the club after a 12-year absence.

Ronaldo wore the no.7 shirt during his six-year stay at the club and he wore the same number in all but one of his nine years at Real Madrid, as Raul occupied it when he first arrived in 2009.

Edinson Cavani is the owner of the shirt but the no.21 shirt is available after Daniel James’ move to Leeds and he wears the same number for Uruguay.

Cavani would be willing to change to the no.21 shirt in order to give his number to Ronaldo and the Times claim United have applied for special dispensation in order to make it possible.

Ronaldo hopes to finally make his debut against Newcastle at Old Trafford after the international break.

The Red devils have accumulated seven points from their first three games, beating Wolves and Leeds in between a draw against Southampton.

James joined Leeds for an initial fee of around £25m on deadline day after he was told his game time would be limited following Ronaldo’s arrival.
