Man Utd’s transfer stance on Matthijs de Ligt changes after Leny Yoro update

Manchester United might need to “dig deeper” to secure Matthijs de Ligt after new signing Leny Yoro’s injury setback.

Yoro, who recently joined from Lille for £59million, sustained the injury during United’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Although United hasn’t revealed the severity, the early indications are not promising.

The 18-year-old had to leave the match in the first half and was later seen on crutches and wearing a protective plastic boot on his left foot at UCLA, United’s training base in LA.

Losing Yoro for a significant time would be a major setback for United and manager Erik ten Hag, who intended to have the French youngster as a central part of his new-look defense for the upcoming season.

Ten Hag faces additional defensive issues, as Lisandro Martinez has not yet returned to training after winning the Copa America with Argentina.

The Premier League opener against Fulham on August 16 might be too soon for him.

Victor Lindelof, who has been rumored to be leaving the club, has only just resumed full training after a minor injury.

Currently, Ten Hag might have to rely on veterans Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans to start the season in central defense. Left-back Luke Shaw is another possible option from the existing squad.

United aims to strengthen their defensive lineup further, and Bayern Munich’s De Ligt, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax, remains a target.

United has “verbally agreed personal terms” with the Dutch defender, but the clubs still differ on the fee.

Bayern won’t easily part with a player they acquired for over £60million from Juventus two years ago.

While it might not take that much to secure the 24-year-old from Bavaria, United might be compelled to increase their offer following Yoro’s injury.

Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is another primary defensive target for United. However, the clubs disagree on his valuation, with Everton demanding at least £70million for the 22-year-old.

United’s bid of £45million, plus £5m in add-ons, has been rejected by the Merseyside club.
