Why Man Utd turned down chance to sign Timo Werner ahead of Spurs

Reports suggest that Manchester United decided against signing Timo Werner before Tottenham, who are now close to securing the RB Leipzig striker on loan for the remainder of the season.

United, aiming to bolster Erik ten Hag’s attacking choices, had Werner on their shortlist for the January transfer window.

The player has scored two goals in 14 appearances for RB Leipzig this season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United chose not to pursue a deal for Werner, as the former Chelsea striker doesn’t match the forward profile they are seeking.

‘It’s a loan, Spurs have buy option but not mandatory so they can get a look at the player before committing,’ Romano told CaughtOffside.

‘Timo is super hungry as he believes this is great opportunity for him.

‘Manchester United also considered Werner as a possibility but then they decided not to proceed also because it’s not clear yet what kind of player they want.’

On Monday, Werner is set to travel to London and is anticipated to complete his return to the Premier League in the coming days.

Additionally, Spurs have the choice to make the transfer permanent for €15m-20m (£12.9m-£17.2m) at the conclusion of the season.

‘It’s a win-win for everyone,’ Red Bull Soccer’s technical director, Mario Gomez, told Sport1 when asked about Werner’s imminent move to Spurs.

‘Germany benefits from it. We benefit from it because we get a player going.

‘He will play regularly, that’s what Tottenham has conveyed to us.’

RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose believes that a move to Spurs could serve as an opportunity for Werner to enhance his confidence and address his limited playing time.

‘Timo wants match practice, which I can’t guarantee him at the moment,’ Rose said.

‘He wants to go to the European Championships, and maybe it will help us if he comes back in top condition under certain circumstances.

‘We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed that he gets back on his feet there and gains self-confidence. That’s the most important thing for him.’
