Sadio Mane gives update from hospital after suffering huge head injury in Afcon clash

Liverpool star Sadio Mane says he is doing fine despite being taken to hospital after suffering concussion during Senegal’s win over Cape Verde at the Africa Cup of Nations.

There was concern for Mane after he clashed heads with Cape Verge keeper Vozinha, with the latter sent off for his part in the incident.

Mane required treatment but was allowed to carry on and shortly after scores Senegal’s opening goal in the last-16 match in Bafoussam.

But the 29-year-old, who appeared to be knocked out during the clash of heads, went down to the ground after celebrating his goal and was then substituted.

Bamba Dieng added Senegal’s second in injury-time in a match which saw Cape Verde reduced to nine men after Patrick Andrade had been shown a straight red card in the first half.

Speaking after the 2-0 victory, Senegal manager Aliou Cisse confirmed Mane had been taken to hospital, telling reporters: ‘He felt faint, his head was spinning and he had to go there.’

Mane later posted a picture from his hospital bed alongside Vozinha and confirmed he was okay, although his availability for the rest of the tournament is now in doubt.

Mane has scored 10 goals in 26 matches for Liverpool this campaign to help Jurgen Klopp’s side climb to second in the Premier League and qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.

Senegal, who have never won the Africa Cup of Nations, will now face either Mali or Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Morocco joined Senegal in the last-eight after coming from behind to get a 2-1 win past Malawi. The Atlas Lions meet either Egypt or Ivory Coast in the next round.
