In his debut season, he managed only three clean sheets in 16 Premier League appearances before injuries and performances led to Djordje Petrovic taking over as the primary goalkeeper.
Maresca offered Sanchez another opportunity this season, but the Spanish keeper has committed several notable errors, the most recent occurring in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.
During that match, he gave Manchester United a penalty by awkwardly bringing down Rasmus Hojlund and was then beaten by Bruno Fernandes from the penalty spot.
Although Moises Caicedo’s impressive equalizer prevented further embarrassment, Sanchez now leads the league in penalties conceded, with only Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric having more goal-related mistakes.
Last summer, Chelsea invested £20.5 million in Filip Jorgensen, intending for him to compete with Sanchez and potentially take his place as the starting goalkeeper.
The young Dane is adept with the ball, which aligns well with Maresca’s tactical approach.
Despite Sanchez’s difficulties, reports from the Telegraph indicate that both the manager and the club continue to have complete confidence in the 26-year-old.
They plan to keep him as the first-choice goalkeeper. Considered relatively young for his position, Chelsea believes Sanchez will significantly improve as he gains experience and will remain the primary goalkeeper when they face their intense rivals, Arsenal, on Sunday.
Before that match, Chelsea will play against Armenian team Noah in the Conference League on Thursday night.
It is expected that Jorgensen, aged 22, will start, having participated in all of the club’s cup matches to date.
Interestingly, the Dane’s statistics are similar to Sanchez’s, with Jorgensen conceding seven goals in six games and achieving two clean sheets, compared to Sanchez’s 12 goals conceded in 10 games and also two clean sheets.
