Mason Mount fires warning to Chelsea team-mates after Everton defeat

Mason Mount

Mason Mount has warned his team-mates that they can’t start matches as slowly as they did in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Everton if they are to fulfil their ambitions of reaching the very top.

Everton put an end to Chelsea’s 17-game unbeaten run in all competitions as the club tasted defeat in the Premier League for only the second time this campaign.

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the first half after the blues keeper Mendy brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box.

Everton made life for Chelsea difficult with a good defensive display at Goodison Park. Although Mason Mount hit the woodwork two times in the second half, the London side were not at their best going forward.

The result meant they were unable to close the gap on the league leaders Tottenham. And Mount says if his side harbour ambitions of challenging for the league title, they must not begin matches so sluggishly.

‘Everton are a tough team, they make it very hard,’ Mount told the club’s official website.

‘We know we didn’t start well enough, we didn’t start like we have been playing recently and then we got punished. From 1-0 down it is a difficult game, so we have to look at how we started and correct that for the next game.

‘These things happen sometimes but we want to be pushing for number one and we can’t start like that. We know that.

‘We have to look at where we went wrong and really try to correct it for the next game because the games come thick and fast and it’s another away game so we need to ready for that.

‘We are always going to create but in this game we didn’t put them away but that is sometimes how it goes and we have to look towards the next game.’
