Cunha, formerly of Atletico Madrid, has a £62.5 million release clause in his contract, and United manager Ruben Amorim praised his “exceptional quality” during a pre-match press conference before their 1-0 win over Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Following the match, Cunha was spotted taking photos with Manchester United fans, fueling speculation. Fabrizio Romano later provided an update, confirming United as the favorites to sign Cunha and indicating that initial steps have already been taken.

On his official X account, he wrote: “Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing.

“Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available.

“Good feelings after initial contacts between Cunha and #MUFC.”

Matheus Cunha addresses Manchester United transfer speculation. Having netted 32 goals in 87 appearances for Wolves, Cunha has also been heavily connected to potential moves to Chelsea and Arsenal.

On Wednesday, the Brazilian forward took to his official Instagram account to respond to the swirling rumors.

Sharing a picture of himself working in the gym, he wrote: “Let’s work, shall we? Too much conversation.”

Manager Vitor Pereira was asked about Cunha’s future this month and admitted he is unsure as to whether the 25-year-old will remain with Wolves next campaign.

“Next season, I don’t know,” he said.

“The focus is the next game, the next game. The focus is the team and Matheus makes part of the team, not for this game but my focus is my team.

“In the summer, we will see what happens but in my opinion, it’s normal that a player with his potential has ambition.”

Matheus Cunha is set to return to the pitch for Wolves on Saturday as they welcome Leicester City to Molineux.

Despite having a contract with the club that runs until 2029, reports suggest that the Brazilian forward agreed to the terms with the understanding that he could pursue a fresh challenge during the upcoming summer transfer window.
