Edouard Mendy reveals what has surprised him most since his move to Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has conceded that the Premier League’s intensity has left him surprised as his debut campaign in England is now closer towards its conclusion.

The Senegal international moved to Stamford Bridge in September as former manager Frank Lampard looked to improve his goalkeeping options after a number of mistakes made by Kepa during the 2019/20 season.

Although he was a completely unknown figure to almost every Chelsea fan, Mendy has wasted little time in proving his worth, racking up 22 clean sheets in 38 matches.

As well as that, the 29-year-old also recorded seven clean sheets in his first ten games for the club, ensuring he got off to the perfect start.

However, although Mendy has enjoyed an outstanding debut season in west London, he has conceded that the intensity of the Premier League did catch him by surprise.

Mendy, participating in a Q&A session, told Chelsea’s club website: “Yes, the intensity. There is a lot more intensity than in France. When I saw games in England, I thought that, but when you live the situation, it’s different.

“It’s very difficult because compared to France the goalkeeper is not protected. Opponents can block you and stop you coming out of your goal, but contact is something I like. It doesn’t affect me.

“Also, in December you don’t have a break. It was a new thing for me. I liked it. “Of course, when you come in England, you think about fans. The atmosphere in England is amazing, but unfortunately I cannot see that yet, but I hope soon.”

The Blues have enjoyed a very successful three-month period under Thomas Tuchel, so much that Mendy could end his debut season at the club with both an FA Cup and UEFA Champions League winners medal.

“It’s gone well, but it’s not finished,” Mendy added, as he reflected on his first season at the club. “I’m proud, because at the moment it’s a good season for me and for the team. We are still in the FA Cup, the Champions League and the top-four for the Premier League.

“There have been a lot of games, and maybe good things are coming. I’m happy but it’s not finished. There are a few weeks left with huge targets for us.

“I am focused on finishing the season well and continuing to work on my development, and not thinking about what has gone before.”
