Mertens set for Chelsea move after talks with Frank Lampard

Dries Mertens is interested in a transfer move to London after being in contact with Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard, according to reports.

The Napoli forward’s contract expires this summer window and Chelsea are one of several teams chasing his signature.

Lampard failed in a bid to sign Mertens last January window, but has continued his push to convince the Belgium international to join Chelsea since then.

According to the Daily Mail, Mertens is keen on a move to London, which will be a big boost to Chelsea’s efforts to lure him to the club.

Mertens, however, does have several offers on the table for him ahead of the next window.

Arsenal were also linked with a move for Mertens during the winter window, but passed on the opportunity to sign him due to his age.

Mertens turns 33 next week, but he continues to be an excellent source of goals for his side Napoli with 12 goals in 29 games this campaign.

Frank Lampard sees the Belgian as an excellent addition to his front line due to his versatility.

It is only in recent years that Dries Mertens has played as a centre-forward having previously been used on the left wing for Napoli.

Chsea boss Lampard was eager to make several signings this summer window before the coronavirus crisis cast doubt over the upcoming window.

A left-back, striker and centre-back were on the agenda for the blues, but it is now unclear if the window will go as planned as the Premier League look to play postponed matches this summer.

Most Premier League teams are expected to redraft their transfer plans due to the financial issues caused by the health crisis.
