In a captivating conversation with Argentine television, Lionel Messi highlighted the two football clubs that stand out globally due to their impressive “results” and the quality of their gameplay.
The celebrated footballer, aged 36, who is set to participate in the upcoming Copa America hosted in the United States, engaged in a comprehensive interview with Infobae at the Le Meridien Hotel in Florida, discussing various topics.

As the tournament approaches, Argentina is gearing up to retain their title, facing off against Canada, Chile, and Peru in Group A. Messi expresses optimism regarding Argentina’s prospects of success.
“I think that Argentina is always the favourite,” he said. “When a championship starts, be it a world championship, Copa America or whatever, Argentina is a candidate just like Brazil.”
Messi shared his sense of “relief” at achieving the status of a world champion after Argentina’s triumph in Qatar. He also delved into his experiences living in America and playing for MLS team Inter Miami.
Yet, what truly captured attention were his insights on the elite football clubs that dominate the global stage.
“Real Madrid is the best team in the world, they have won the Champions League. If you go by results, Real Madrid is the best,” Messi admitted in the interview.
“If you go by level of the game, I think Manchester City are the best.”
He added: “I personally like Guardiola’s City. I think that any team where Guardiola is will be special because of the way he is, the way he trains and the way he works. He makes his teams play.”
Thus, according to Messi, the recently victorious Champions League team, Real Madrid, stands at the pinnacle in terms of results. However, for the sheer brilliance of gameplay, it’s the Premier League victors, Manchester City, who take the top spot.
He also reflected on the unforgettable World Cup victory in 2022, where Argentina emerged victorious over France in a penalty shootout following an electrifying 3-3 tie at Lusail Stadium.
“I feel relieved to be a world champion, because the debt I owed to my family, my country and all the fans has now been paid,” he said. “But life goes on, I want to try and win the Copa America again.”
Somewhat surprisingly, Messi said: “I haven’t watched the World Cup final back yet.”
