He joined the Major League Soccer team after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, where he arrived on a free transfer following his time at Barcelona.
Messi has now made his mark in three different leagues, excelling in Spain and France before moving to the U.S.
Although Premier League fans never saw Messi play in England, despite past links to Manchester United and Chelsea, he has shown admiration for the league.
In 2012, Messi named Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, and Robin van Persie as the Premier League’s best players.
“There are several quality players in the Premier League like Kun Aguero, who is my friend. I really like how he plays,” he revealed in an old interview.
“Rooney [and] Van Persie are playing really well – they are great players.”
Aguero, Messi’s teammate on the international stage, had a legendary career at Manchester City, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 260 goals.
During his decade at the Etihad, he secured five Premier League titles.
Messi, a winner of eight Ballon d’Or awards, also mentioned Rooney and Van Persie, both of whom shone at Manchester United during their careers. Rooney, like Aguero, claimed five league titles and netted 253 goals for United.
Although Van Persie won just one league title, he was a prolific scorer in the Premier League, tallying 96 goals for Arsenal and 48 for Manchester United.
