Mohamed Salah hits back at Sergio Ramos over injection claims

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has laughed off Sergio Ramos’s claims that he could have continued playing in the Champions League final, insisting that leaving the field that night was the worst moment of his career.

Salah left the pitch in tears last month after tangling with Ramos in the first half of Liverpool’s 3-1 loss.

It was an injury that was frightening for Egypt ahead of the World Cup in Russia, though national team coach Hector Cuper has remained hopeful that the Premier League top scorer will be fit for the tournament.

Ramos had his own say on the injury, meanwhile, saying that Salah could have continued the match if he had received injections – a claim that the Egyptian finds humorous.

He told Marca: “(Laughs) My comment is that it’s always okay when the one who made you cry first, then makes you laugh. Maybe he could also tell me if I’m going to be ready for the World Cup?”

Asked about Ramos’s comment that there’s a possibility Salah locked arms with him rather than the other way around, Salah added: “It’s funny…

“He sent me a message, but I never told him it was ‘okay.'”

“Yes, it was,” Salah said when asked if having to exit the Champions League final was the worst moment of his career.

“When I fell to the ground, I had a mixture of physical pain and a lot of worry. Also anger and sadness for not being able to continue playing the Champions League final.

“Moments later, I also thought about the possibility of not playing in the World Cup and that was a devastating thought.”

Egypt will play their first World Cup Group A match against Uruguay on June 15 and Salah is hoping he will be fit enough to play in that game.

He added: “Now I’m better. I hope to play the first game against Uruguay, but that will depend on how I feel when it [the match] approaches.”

“It’s the first time in 28 years that we qualified… it was not normal because we won the African Cup seven times, and we were champions in 2006, 2008 and 2010,” Salah continued.

“It was common to win the African Cup, but we didn’t qualify for the World Cup. And it was something we all said: ‘wow, we have to do it, we have to do it.’

“We had not achieved it for a long time and it was something very special. Maybe like for Spain to win the World Cup.”
