Mourinho fires warning to Man United board over De Gea contract

Mourinho has warned Manchester United board to show their ambition by meeting the wage demands of goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Spain international will be out of contract at the end of the season though United have an option to trigger 12 month extension clause before the end of the year.

The club would not want to activate that as they view it as an acceptance that the 28-year-old will not sign a new long-term contract at the club but negotiations have slowed over a new deal.

De Gea made one of his greatest saves ever in the 1-0 win against Young Boys at Old Trafford on Tuesday and Mourinho revealed afterwards that the Spaniard wants to stay.

However, the 55-year-old hinted the deal had not been done because the club were still in talks with De Gea over his demands.

‘I know he wants to stay,’ Mourinho said.
‘I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they are working on that. So hopefully, sooner or later, they arrive at a good conclusion.

‘Without David’s save, there would be no winning goal. He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, a winning club you need the best goalkeeper in the world.

‘You also need some other best players [in their position] in the world, in this case we only have the best goalkeeper in the world.’

Marouane Fellaini’s injury time goal ensured United progressed to the next round but a repeat of that performance will give them little opportunity of progressing further in the competition.

United face Southampton on Saturday as they look to close the gap on the top four.
