Neville slams Alonso for costing Chelsea the game against West Ham

Chelsea Marcos Alonso

Gary Neville has hit out at Marcos Alonso for ‘costing Chelsea the game’ in their Premier League defeat to West Ham.

Lampard’s side fell to a disappointing 3-2 loss in London on Wednesday, with Yarmolenko’s late counter-attack goal giving West Ham a huge win in the race to avoid relegation.

Former Manchester United defender Neville blasted Alonso for his role in West Ham’s winning goal, with the full-back failing to track Yarmolenko’s run from his own half.

‘Look at him, look at him, look at him. What are you doing, Marcos Alonso? What are you doing? That’s his running back speed,’ Neville, commentating on the game for Sky Sports, said.

‘It’s cost Chelsea the game, along with a poor piece of defending from Rudiger. I mentioned it earlier. That’s why he’s under pressure at this football club. Frank Lampard will see that.

‘Run back as fast as you can when you lose the ball, you learn that at the age of six.’

It was Chelsea who looked more likely to score the fifth goal of the match but West Ham found the winner in the dying minutes through second-half substitute Yarmolenko.

‘They’re going to be disappointed,’ Chelsea hero Ashley Cole added after the match. ‘The thing I hate about full-backs is they’re happy to run forward but then not track back.

‘I get that they’re pushing for a goal but you need a point here, a point would have been okay for Chelsea.

‘Could he [Marcos Alonso] have got back quicker? Could he have recovered quicker? Probably, yes. As a team you need to want to work and Alonso needs to run back quicker.’

Former West Ham player James Collins said: ‘Alonso never showed any desire to get back there. ‘He’s willing to run forward but at no point does he get back. As a manger you’d be fuming with him.’
