Heading into Saturday’s crucial fixture at Old Trafford, Amorim was under intense scrutiny due to United’s poor start to the 2025-26 season. ..Continue Reading
Following three losses in their first six league outings, The Telegraph reported that the Portuguese manager could face dismissal if his side were beaten by Regis Le Bris’s newly-promoted Sunderland.
The report indicated that several players were ‘losing faith’ in Amorim’s ability to turn things around, and ‘concerns’ were growing over how the ongoing poor form was affecting squad morale.
Despite the speculation, United secured a vital win on Saturday afternoon, with first-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko earning a well-deserved 2-0 result.
Just hours after the final whistle, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano shed light on United’s “plan” ahead of the match.
Speaking via his YouTube channel, Romano said: “What is happening is also that Man Utd won the game against Sunderland and closed all the speculation, at least for the next few weeks, for Ruben Amorim, so they head into the international break way more relaxed.
“The new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, finally started and got a clean sheet – and so a very good start for Lammens and a very good result for Amorim.
“As I told you guys, Manchester United were not going to sack Amorim even if they were going to lose the game against Sunderland. Even in that case, he was not going to be fired.
“That was the plan of Man Utd unless completely crazy things happened, like losing, I don’t know, 3 or 4 or 5-0. But, for example, losing the game, I don’t know, 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, something like that – Amorim was not going to be fired.”
Although United have denied actively searching for replacements, several names have recently been linked with the job.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is said to be on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s shortlist, along with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and free agent Graham Potter, who was let go by West Ham.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has also been mentioned in media reports, though Fabrizio Romano has dismissed those claims.
“Man Utd’s message was quite clear and they never contacted other managers,” he said.
“I spent basically the last 10 days telling you that Gareth Southgate was in the media, but there was never a concrete negotiation between Man Utd and Southgate or his representatives.
“There is a very good relationship between Southgate and INEOS, but never a negotiation. And Man United wanted to show their support to Amorim.”
