Nigeria’s Nwabali breaks 44-year record after Super Eagles’ win over Angola

On Friday, Stanley Nwabali of Nigeria achieved a remarkable feat by breaking a 44-year record for Super Eagles goalkeepers during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

This milestone was attained through Nwabali’s impressive performance, securing four consecutive clean sheets in the AFCON tournament.

Chippa United’s goalkeeper has exceeded Best Ogedegbe’s 1980 record and Alloy Agu’s 1990 three-game streak for the Super Eagles.

This achievement came after maintaining a clean sheet against Angola during the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Nwabali’s stellar performance played a crucial role in helping Jose Peseiro’s team secure a spot in the AFCON semi-final, with Nigeria defeating Angola 1-0 in the quarter-final, thanks to Ademola Lookman’s goal.

Leading up to the Angola match, Nwabali had already secured clean sheets against Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Guinea-Bissau.

Having participated in five matches, he has allowed only one goal, which came from Equatorial Guinea.

Nwabali aims to sustain his remarkable record as Nigeria prepares to confront the victor between South Africa and Cape Verde in the semifinals.
