Why Samu Omorodion rejected disrespectful Chelsea offer

Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion turned down a transfer to Chelsea due to a disagreement over “image rights,” according to Spanish reports.

Chelsea seemed set to sign Omorodion after reaching a €40 million (£34.5m) agreement with Atletico Madrid.

However, the deal fell through over the weekend as Omorodion and Chelsea could not finalize “personal terms.”

El Chiringuito reports that the conflict arose from Chelsea’s proposal to acquire 50 percent of Omorodion’s “image rights.”

The report suggests that Omorodion feels Chelsea’s offer was disrespectful and, consequently, the 20-year-old is unwilling to continue negotiations.

Omorodion, who netted eight goals in 35 appearances during his loan at Alaves last season and won an Olympic gold medal with Spain’s men’s team this summer, is now likely to stay with Atletico.

Chelsea have now turned their attention to re-signing Joao Felix from Atletico.

The 24-year-old, who spent five months on loan at Chelsea last year, has expressed his willingness to return to Stamford Bridge for another stint.

Felix, who was on loan at Barcelona last season and scored 10 goals in 44 matches, has been the subject of interest from Barcelona’s new head coach, Hansi Flick.

Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, mentioned in June that Flick was eager to retain Felix at Camp Nou.

“We want them to stay. Deco is working to ensure they remain another season under the current terms,” Laporta said on the Barca One podcast.

“Flick considers them high-quality players and had tried to bring Joao Felix to Bayern when he was coaching there. I believe Felix could have performed better due to his extraordinary quality.”

Despite the collapse of Omorodion’s transfer to Chelsea, Atletico continues to pursue deals for Conor Gallagher and Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez.
