Following a rocky couple of years, Onana finally departed United on September 11, securing a season-long loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor. ..Continue Reading
The Cameroonian shot-stopper arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £47.2 million, but struggled to live up to expectations during his 102 appearances in goal.
When United boss Ruben Amorim opted not to feature Onana in any of the team’s first three Premier League games — and then signed Senne Lammens on deadline day — it became apparent that the 29-year-old’s time in Manchester was nearing its end.
Since linking up with the Super Lig outfit, Onana has certainly made an impression, with plenty of United fans taken aback by his latest display for his new side.
Just days after his move was finalized, Onana made his first appearance for Trabzonspor in a league clash against Fenerbahce, earning the *player of the match* accolade even though his team suffered a 1-0 defeat.
However, it was in his second outing that Onana further showcased his impact, playing a key role in salvaging a draw against Gaziantep by setting up Paul Onuachu’s equalizer.
With Trabzonspor trailing 1-0 in the 70th minute, Onana stepped out of his penalty area and launched a long ball to the forward, who skillfully navigated past four Gaziantep defenders and their goalkeeper to level the score.
Reacting to the moment, one United fan wrote on social media: “Andre Onana has just made an assist for Trabzonspor’s goal. Leave Man Utd, become a decent footballer again.”
While a rival fan added: “Every player thrives away from United. A rotten club.”
While another United fan claimed: “The perfect league for him, they’re not letting him do this in the prem.”
Although Onana appears to be thriving in Turkey, United supporters probably aren’t too concerned, especially after their side claimed an important victory over Chelsea shortly before his performance for Trabzonspor.
It was a wild encounter that saw red cards on both sides, ultimately ending in a 2-1 win for United, thanks to goals from captain Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
In goal for that match was Turkish international Altay Bayindir, making his fifth Premier League appearance of the season, with Lammens still waiting for his debut.
