Ozil had ‘sleepless night’ after Arsenal’s defeat to Atletico Madrid

Mesut Ozil has spoken out after Arsenal’s disappointing loss to Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the Europa League.

The Gunners missed a big chance to take a lead in the first leg of the match against a 10-man Atletico side and the match ended 1-1.

In the second leg, Diego Costa returned to score the only goal of the game at the Wanda Metropolitano.

It was a bad night for Arsenal as Wenger’s last opportunity to lift a trophy with the club faded away and Ozil faced a wave of criticism for his performance.

‘What a frustrating, sleepless night in Madrid!’ Ozil posted on Instagram on Friday evening.

‘This was our last chance to win a trophy this season, our last chance to lift another silverware with our boss.

‘Still two more things to say: Thanks to all Gunners for the away support. And get well soon Laurent Koscielny.’

Arsenal legend Martin Keown said Ozil was ‘not fit to wear the shirt’ after his display in the second leg.

‘These are crocodile tears I’m seeing. He’s not conning me,’ the former defender said on BT Sport .

‘I bet he doesn’t play again this season. He will have some emotional breakdown and won’t be able to play at the weekend.

‘He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt for me tonight, and I have seen this a lot this season.’

Though, Wenger defended Ozil’s performance.

‘We lose as a team. When you want to be listened to now you have to be extreme and football is more complex than that,’ Wenger said.

‘You will see that when you analyse his physical performance that he gave a lot.

‘It was a difficult game, physically very intense, and I am convinced Ozil should not be now victimised by anyone because we did not score.’
